She’s right - lots of people have grown up with her show; it began airing when I was 7 and I do not remember a time in my life when it was not on every afternoon.

As cheese-balls as it sounds, Oprah is in many ways like a second mother to me. I find her presence calming, nurturing, steady, and obviously consistent. I once worked on a project for her, and in my experience she was all these things in person with no cameras rolling, too. I’m straight-up heartbroken.

The Twimpsons.

The Twimpsons.

EDITED, because Porter H.

Well this story is nuts. A cheerleader got a flu shot and her body had a one and a million disorder triggered by the flu shot. She has difficulty moving and also talking. However she can walk normal if she goes backwards, and she can talk totally fine when she runs forward.

Why is New Moon getting such poor reviews?

I saw New Moon last night, and as Lainey noted in her review, people giggled during the entire thing. Sometimes it was at Anna Kendrick, who was legitimately funny the few times she was in the movie, but most of the time the laughter was in response to the cheese that oozed off the screen. Don’t get me wrong, if you’re a Twilight fan you’ll love the whole thing, and some performances are pretty solid (Kendrick, Kristen Stewart, Michael Sheen). But if you’re not, the whole movie surely looks a bit ridiculous. And I agree with Lainey’s overall points:

The wolf pack was not beefy enough

The reunion not sexy enough

The effects were 1999ish

The cheese was too thick (Velveeta spoiler-y moments of note: the dream catcher, the moment in Bella’s kitchen where Jacob whispers something in Quileute)

Plus, this is the snooziest off all the Twi-books. It’s just Bella sitting around doing dumb shit for a few months. So fans should know what they’re getting into. Surprisingly, I found myself missing Catherine Hardwicke’s gritty, passionate eye. The first Twilight movie is far from perfect, but she nailed the dark mood of both the overall story and the romance between Bella and Edward. In New Moon, Chris Weitz just kinda makes everything look pretty.

The one interesting thing I came away with was that the movie did a better job than the books of making Jacob a sympathetic, likable character. I actually rooted for him during the film, and I clearly wasn’t the only one, as the woman sitting behind me said “Um hello, fuck yeah Team Jacob!” as the credits started to roll. As for his body, it’s hotter than you think it’s going to be, especially in the rain.

Another thing I did like was how Weitz captured the months post break-up (fans of the book will recognize this as the pages October-November-December). It’s sweet and sad and relatable, and Lykke Li’s “Possibilities” really worked to set the mood. It’s one of the few moments in the movie where the emotion (fine work by KStew) felt truly raw and real. I almost shed a tear here, but for the most part while watching New Moon, I laughed a lot more than I cried.

Onward to Eclipse and the Brazilian fuck-fest that is Breaking Dawn!

[Also, I do not want to talk about the Remember Me trailer. It looks cliched and awkward and Robert Pattinson and the Lost chick’s chemistry has got nothing on him and KStew’s bonetastic vibe. Flop city.]

robsessed: r0bsession:

was it actually bad or is chris weitz just not liked? i’m getting a little worried… i really really hope its good because i am so excited for it. what is going onnnn! it looked amazing on the previews.

where are you reading reviews? I can’t find any. I thought it was gonna get good reviews. Twilight got a D or something, you can’t go by the critics…they’re a bunch of old men. Yahoo users gave it a B+ so far, so I’ll go by that.

Extending life… all right, let’s look at the great “strides” made toward pancreatic cancer. The drug Gemzar is touted as the panacea for this deadly disease. Gemzar has been compared to the previous “best” chemo for pancreatic cancer and the median survival improved from 4.2 months to only 5.7 months. About one extra month of life for this expensive drug? Not one single patient out of 126 in the study survived longer than 19 months. But Gemzar has been considered such an advance that the FDA approved it and now it’s a billion-dollar industry. It’s used all over the world. This is considered a major “advance”?”

-
Suzanne Somers is kinda crazy, so crazy that she’s written a book full of her interviews with doctors about cancer. But for all her quackery, I am in agreement with her about Gemzar. There is essentially just one chemo solution for people with advanced pancreatic cancer, and it only works for a very small percentage of patients. Gemzar (paired with Tarceva) did nothing for my mom (except inflict horrible side effects). I know we’re talking about people suffering from Stage 4 of a brutal cancer, but still… I wish my mother had had more options. She lived 8 months.
