I am as tired as the next person of the “OMG ARE WOMEN FUNNY? WHERE ARE THE FEMALE COMEDIANS? WOMEN, CREATE THANGZZZ!” conversation, but it also bums me out when I go to eagerly check out the SXSW comedy line up only to discover they’ve apparently booked just one female stand up out of 30+ performers. This stand up happens to be Tig Notaro, who is a hilarious genius and whom I quietly worship at my creepy comedy altar. But still, there are tons of amazing lady stand ups out there and unless they’re all booked for Letterman and Conan on the same night, I am confused as to why not one of these women is scheduled to perform. This is just a list I quickly threw together based on my own limited stand up knowledge and Twitter feed; I’m surely missing a bunch of other funny ladies.
- Maria Bamford
- Chelsea Peretti
- Margaret Cho
- Janeane Garafalo
- Morgan Murphy
- Whitney Cummings
- Natasha Leggero
- Sarah Silverman
- Ronna and Beverly
- Garfunkel & Oates
- Charlyne Yi
- Michelle Collins
- Jen Kirkman
- Jena Friedman
- Kristen Schaal
- Ali Waller
- Julia Segal
- Jessi Klein
- Sara Schaefer
Yes, women are funny and yes, women are creating things. See: examples above. So why not hire them to do their thing? It’s not like the good folks at SXSW haven’t invited more than one woman stand up to perform at past festivals. So what gives, SXSW?
