Tonight

text

After dinner, my dad somehow managed to find the most amazing standup comedy special on HBO. It was filmed at Dangerfield’s in 1986, and featured standup from (in order) Jerry Seinfeld, Robert Townsend, Sam Kinison and Roseanne Barr. Plus lots of racist comedy from Rodney himself! We laughed and laughed, and then followed it with 30 minutes of Ellegen Degeneres from 1992.

I’m looking at my baby photo albums (cryfest!) and realized something interesting - the pictures of my mom looking at me in the seconds/minutes right after I was born - her gaze is the same. It’s interesting/frustrating/fascinating to learn about motherhood through pictures, but I’ve kinda realized a good mother’s love doesn’t change from birth until (their) death. It’s amazing that from the ages of 28-56, the way she looked at me remained the same. Even when I tried (and succeeded!) to smuggle vodka in a Poland Spring bottle on my high school spring break, my mom still looked at me with a loving gaze.

I feel lucky.
